Most Common Food Allergies

In the United States, about one in 13 children and one in 10 adults has at least one food allergy. Food allergies trigger immune responses that range from itchy skin to a life-threatening condition called anaphylaxis.

It’s possible to develop an allergy to any food, but more than 90% of food-related allergic reactions in the United States come from just eight types of food. If you or your child has a food allergy, avoiding that food and having an allergy response plan are important.

The eight most common food allergies

Anyone can have a food allergy. These allergies often develop in childhood, but some of them appear in adulthood. The eight most common food groups responsible for the most allergic reactions are:

Eggs

Egg allergies are often triggered by proteins in the egg white. However, people with egg allergies should avoid all parts of the egg. Children with egg allergies may grow out of it as they get older, but that’s not always the case.

Fish

Finned fish — like halibut, salmon, and tuna — cause some of the most common food allergies. In many cases, people experience their first allergic reaction to fish when they’re adults. Being allergic to fish does not increase your risk of having allergies to other foods like shellfish.

Milk

Allergies to cow’s milk are common among babies and toddlers. The risk of allergy increases if your baby is exposed to cow’s milk before they’re 6 months old. Nearly 2.5% of children under 3 are allergic to cow’s milk and dairy products, but many grow out of the allergy as they get older. 

Peanuts

Peanuts are a type of legume that grows underground. Allergies to peanuts are common and produce some of the most severe reactions in people of all ages. Peanut allergies affect up to 8% of children and 2% of adults

Shellfish

Like fish allergies, shellfish allergies are most often discovered in adulthood. The most common shellfish that trigger allergic reactions are crab, lobster, and shrimp. Shellfish allergies aren’t related to fish allergies even though both types of food come from the sea. You may have one allergy but not the other.

Soy

Like peanuts, soybeans are a legume. Soy allergies can affect children and adults, and they’re particularly common in babies and young children. But just because you’re allergic to one type of legume doesn’t increase your chances of being allergic to another.

Tree nuts

Tree nuts include almonds, cashews, hazelnuts, pistachios, walnuts, and other nuts — but not peanuts. As the name implies, tree nuts grow on trees. Tree nut allergies are common among children and adults, and being allergic to one type increases your risk of being allergic to another type.

Wheat

Wheat is a grain, and a common cause of allergic reaction in children. More than 60% of children with a wheat allergy outgrow it by the time they turn 12. A wheat allergy is different from celiac disease, which is a lifelong autoimmune disorder.
